Description

Gyeran Bap is a delightful South Korean comfort food that combines rich, buttery rice with eggs, creating a warm and satisfying dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Cooked Short Grain or Jasmine Rice (Hot when mixed with butter)
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter (Can substitute with vegan butter)
  • 1 large Egg (Can substitute with tofu scramble for vegan option)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Vegetable Oil (Any neutral oil will work)
  • 1 teaspoon Toasted Sesame Oil (Can be omitted or replaced with olive oil)
  • 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce (Adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame Seeds (Optional but recommended for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Green Onion (Chives can substitute)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Begin with freshly cooked short-grain or jasmine rice. While it’s hot, transfer it to a bowl and toss it with the butter until it melts and coats the rice evenly.
  2. Heat the Skillet: Place a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add vegetable oil. Allow the oil to warm gently, spreading it evenly across the surface.
  3. Add Rice to Pan: Once the oil shimmers, carefully scoop the buttery rice into the skillet, pressing it down lightly to create an even layer.
  4. Cook and Crisp: Allow the rice to cook undisturbed for about 3–5 minutes until you notice a golden crust forming on the bottom.
  5. Add the Egg: Push the rice to the sides of the pan, creating an empty space in the center. Crack the egg directly into this space, allowing it to sizzle. Gently stir the egg until it begins to set, folding it into the rice.
  6. Season and Combine: Drizzle in the soy sauce, mixing everything thoroughly until well combined.
  7. Finishing Touch: Stir in the toasted sesame oil if using, mixing well to incorporate that delicious nutty aroma. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top.
  8. Plating: Serve hot, garnished with additional green onions and sesame seeds for an appetizing presentation.

Notes

Make-Ahead Tips: Cook the rice ahead of time and store it in the fridge. When you’re ready to whip up Gyeran Bap, heat it again with butter for the best flavor, ensuring it becomes fluffy again.
