Description
Indulge in the most decadent French toast made with thick brioche bread soaked in a rich custard mixture, topped with mixed berries and whipped cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf Brioche bread or French bread
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp maple syrup extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- A pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter (for frying)
- 2 cups mixed berries
- 1 cup whipped cream (for serving)
- 1/2 cup maple syrup (for serving)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, crack the six large eggs into the bowl. Pour in the whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, maple syrup extract, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Use your hand whisk to blend everything together until you achieve a creamy and smooth custard, about 2-3 minutes.
- Preheat your frying pan(s) over medium-low heat. Add 1.5 to 2 tablespoons of butter to each pan and allow it to melt, forming a luscious layer that prevents sticking.
- While the butter melts, slice the brioche bread into thick pieces if not pre-sliced. Each slice should be around 1-inch thick to ensure it holds its shape and absorbs the custard nicely.
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, making sure to soak it thoroughly. Let any excess custard drip back into the bowl, ensuring not to oversaturate.
- Place the soaked slices onto the preheated pan without overcrowding. Fry in batches of two or three. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, turning when the bottom side is beautifully caramelized and golden brown.
- Once cooked, transfer the French toast to a warm tray while you fry the remaining slices, adding more butter as needed for each batch.
- Serve immediately with fluffy whipped cream, a drizzle of maple syrup, fresh mixed berries, and a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an extravagant finish.
Notes
Utilize day-old bread for better absorption. The custard mixture can be prepared the night before for convenience.
