Description

A rich and decadent chocolate cake topped with vibrant orange vanilla frosting, creating a delightful contrast of flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Additional orange zest (for garnish)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract in another bowl.
  4. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  5. Carefully stir in the boiling water until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cakes in the pans for 20-25 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  9. Prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter, then adding powdered sugar and heavy cream, followed by orange zest, vanilla extract, and salt.
  10. Frost the cooled cakes, layering and decorating as desired.
  11. Garnish with additional orange zest and chocolate shavings.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using melted coconut oil instead of vegetable oil. This cake can be baked a day in advance for convenience.
