Description

French Onion Pasta combines the comforting flavors of classic French onion soup with the indulgence of pasta, creating a unique culinary experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces pasta (fettuccine or penne)
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup gruyere cheese, grated
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta: Start by boiling water in a large pot. Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  2. Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet, combine butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and stir occasionally, allowing them to caramelize over 25-30 minutes until they turn a deep golden color.
  3. Season the onions: Add thyme, salt, and pepper to the caramelized onions, mixing well to incorporate the seasonings.
  4. Create the broth: Pour in the broth, bringing it to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. Combine the pasta: Stir in the cooked pasta, ensuring it absorbs all that luscious flavor from the broth and onions.
  6. Melt the cheese: Add the grated gruyere cheese, stirring until it melts beautifully into the dish.
  7. Serve and garnish: Dish out the pasta while it’s hot, sprinkled with fresh parsley.

Notes

Make-ahead tips: Prepare the caramelized onions in advance and store them in the fridge for up to 4 days.
